Walk through the largest battlefield in the Czech territory, where the armies of Austria and Prussia clashed in 1866. Visit the museum, memorial, and observation tower with a view of the battlefield.
The Battle of Hradec Králové, also known as the Battle of Chlum, took place on July 3, 1866, and was the decisive clash of the Austro-Prussian War. On the vast area between the rivers Labe and Bystřice, over 400,000 soldiers fought. Today, the area around Chlum is reverently landscaped with many memorials, mass graves, and museums.
The main point of orientation is the Museum of the War of 1866 on Chlum, where you can see period weapons, uniforms, and multimedia exhibits. Nearby stands the monumental memorial of the battle and an observation tower from which you can overlook the entire battlefield. Every year, commemorative events and battle reenactments take place here.
For visitors, a nature trail is prepared leading to the most significant places of the battle, such as the Svíb forest, the Sadová alley of the dead, or the memorial on the Lípa hill. Don't forget to visit the nearby Hrádek u Nechanic chateau, which offers a beautiful view of the landscape. Admission to the museum is charged; the area is accessible year-round.
