The largest peat bog in the Šumava with a unique pond and an educational trail offers an unforgettable walk along wooden boardwalks.
Chalupská slať is located near the village of Borová Lada in the heart of the Šumava National Park. It is the most extensive raised bog in the Czech Republic, protected as a national nature reserve. In the middle of the bog lies a picturesque pond, formed by the flooding of excavated peat.
For visitors, there is an educational trail about 1.5 km long with boardwalks that lead you along the edge of the peat bog to a viewpoint overlooking the pond. Along the way, you will encounter information panels explaining the formation and development of the bog, typical flora and fauna. You may see, for example, the round-leaved sundew, cranberry, or rare bird species.
You can visit Chalupská slať year-round, but it is most beautiful in the summer months when nature is in full bloom. Admission is free, parking is available near a nearby guesthouse or at a parking lot in Borová Lada. Don't forget to wear sturdy shoes and respect that movement off the marked paths is prohibited.
