About this place

Historical city famous for Budvar beer, with a picturesque square and rich culture. Discover the South Bohemian metropolis full of monuments and entertainment.

České Budějovice, founded in 1265 by King Přemysl Otakar II., is the natural metropolis of South Bohemia. Its dominant feature is the huge square of Přemysl Otakar II. with the Baroque Samson fountain and the town hall. In the vicinity, the Black Tower offers a view of the city and the historic center full of Gothic and Renaissance houses.

Beer lovers will appreciate a tour of the Budějovický Budvar brewery, where the world-famous lager is born. The city also offers a rich cultural life, such as the South Bohemian Theatre, museums, and galleries. Active recreation is promised by cycling paths along the Vltava River or canoeing trips on the river. Technical monuments, such as the former forge or lock chamber, are also interesting.

Regular events attract visitors, such as the traditional Budějovický Majáles or Advent markets. Thanks to excellent accessibility by train and car, Budějovice is a great starting point for trips to the surroundings – to Hluboká, Český Krumlov, or Šumava. Don't forget to try local specialties such as carp in black sauce or South Bohemian pastries.
