Visiting the Červená blata peat bog in Šumava will immerse you in a mysterious landscape full of blueberries, carnivorous plants, and the fragile beauty of sphagnum moss.
Červená blata is an extensive raised peat bog in Šumava, located near the village of Hliniště u Strážného. It is a nature reserve with a unique ecosystem, where the surface develops a typical red coloration due to the decomposition of sphagnum moss. The area is known for rare plants such as round-leaved sundew, small cranberry, and bog bilberry.
For visitors, a wooden educational trail about 1.5 km long has been prepared, leading along boardwalks to a viewing platform. The trail is easy and suitable for families with children. During the walk, you will learn interesting facts about the formation of the peat bog, historical peat mining, and current conservation efforts. Beautiful views open up onto the surrounding Šumava forests and hills.
The best time to visit is spring, when the peat bog blooms with vibrant colors, or autumn, when the leaves turn golden. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended, as it can be cool and damp even in summer. Parking is available at the edge of the forest near the trail start. Admission is free and open year-round.
