Glacial lake in Šumava with a dark legend about the devil, surrounded by mountain forests and peat bogs.
Čertovo jezero is the largest glacial lake on the Czech side of Šumava, located at an altitude of 1,030 m on the slopes of Mount Špičák. It was formed by glacial activity during the Ice Age, and its dark waters are shrouded in a legend about the devil, who is said to have drowned a greedy farmer here.
The lake is accessible via marked hiking trails from Železná Ruda or Špičák. The surrounding spruce forests and peat bogs create a typical Šumava atmosphere. Nearby, there is another glacial lake – Černé jezero, which is connected by an educational trail.
The area is part of the National Nature Reserve Černé a Čertovo jezero, and entry is allowed only on marked paths. The ideal time to visit is summer and autumn, when you can admire the reflection of the surrounding mountains in the dark water.
