The largest and deepest glacial lake in Šumava, surrounded by mysterious forests with a rich history.
Černé jezero, located in Šumava at an altitude of 1008 m, is the largest and deepest glacial lake in the Czech Republic. With an area of 18.4 ha and a maximum depth of 40 m, it was formed during the last ice age. The lake is surrounded by dense forests and is part of the Šumava National Park. Its name derives from the dark color of the water, caused by surrounding peat bogs and the shade of tall trees.
Several legends are associated with the lake, including the tale of the Black Knight, who is said to guard a treasure at the lake's bottom. In the 19th century, the lake's water was used for timber rafting, as evidenced by a preserved artificial water channel. Today, the lake is a tourist destination, accessible via an educational trail from nearby Špičák. The path is easy and suitable for hikers and families with children.
The surroundings offer beautiful views of Šumava and opportunities to observe local flora and fauna. In winter, the area is popular for cross-country skiing. Visitors should respect nature conservation and stay on marked trails. Swimming and camping are not allowed at the lake.
