The dominant landmark of Klatovy from the 16th century offers a beautiful view of the town and the peaks of Šumava after climbing 206 steps.
Černá věž is an inseparable part of the Klatovy skyline. It was built between 1547 and 1557 as part of the city fortifications and later served as a bell tower. It got its name after a fire in 1873, when its walls darkened. Today it is open to the public as a lookout tower.
The platform at a height of 40 meters is reached by 206 steps. The reward is a panoramic view of the historic center, the Baroque pharmacy U Bílého jednorožce, and the distant peaks of Šumava and Český les. The tower measures 58 meters in total and is one of the tallest structures of its kind in Bohemia.
Your visit can be combined with a tour of the catacombs in the neighboring Jesuit church. It is open from April to October, admission is symbolic. The tower is located directly on Náměstí Míru, parking is available in nearby paid parking lots.
