Čerchov

About this place

The highest peak of the Český les with a lookout tower offers beautiful views of the Šumava and Bavarian Forest. A popular destination for hikers and cyclists.

Čerchov, at 1,042 meters, is the highest mountain of the Český les and a prominent landmark of the entire area. At its summit stand a military tower and a tourist lookout tower, which on clear days provide panoramic views of the Šumava, Bavarian Forest, and the interior of the Pilsen Region. The summit is easily accessible via marked trails, popular among hikers and cyclists, and in winter offers opportunities for cross-country skiers.

The history of Čerchov is tied to an ancient surveying tradition – as early as the 16th century it was used as an important reference point. In the 19th century, the first wooden lookout tower was built here, later replaced by military structures. From the 1960s, the tower served the army and was inaccessible to the public. After the regime change, the lookout tower was reopened and today it is one of the sought-after tourist destinations.

During your visit, we recommend taking one of the access routes – the most popular leads from the settlement of Česká Kubice or from the German side near the village of Leuchtenberg. Don't forget refreshments at the mountain hut below the summit. Due to the altitude and location at the interface of climatic influences, the weather can be variable, so it is advisable to be well equipped for the hike.
