Popular recreational area on the edge of Brno offers swimming, boat trips, and hiking in picturesque nature.
Brněnská přehrada, formerly known as Kníničská přehrada, was built between 1936–1940 as flood protection and a source of drinking water. Today it is a sought-after destination for relaxation and active leisure. Its shores are lined with beaches, marinas, and refreshment stands.
One of the main attractions is sightseeing cruises on a historic steamboat, which evokes the atmosphere of the First Republic. From the boat you can admire Veveří Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in the Czech Republic, perched on a rocky promontory above the water. In summer, well-maintained grassy beaches, such as at Sokolské koupaliště, invite swimming.
The area around the reservoir is crisscrossed by hiking and cycling trails. A popular circuit of about 12 km runs along both banks, offering views of the water and wooded slopes. For families with children, a visit to ZOO Brno or relaxation on the meadows by the dam is ideal. In winter, the reservoir turns into a center for ice skating on natural ice.
