Descend into the underground beneath the Church of St. Jacob and discover a European unique – an ossuary with the remains of more than 50,000 people. A mysterious atmosphere that will engulf you.
Brněnská kostnice is located under the Church of St. Jacob on Jakubské Square. It was discovered accidentally during an archaeological survey in 2001 and after extensive reconstruction opened to the public. It is one of the largest ossuaries in Europe, the second largest after the Paris Catacombs.
In the underground, there are remains of up to 50,000 people, stored in a complex system of corridors and rooms. The dead were originally buried in the adjacent cemetery, but due to plague epidemics and the Hussite wars, the cemetery had to be repeatedly expanded and older remains placed in special ossuary spaces.
The ossuary is open year-round, we recommend purchasing tickets online. During the tour, you will see impressive arrangements of skulls and bones, illuminated by mysterious light. The entrance is located in the courtyard of the Church of St. Jacob. Do not forget to wear sturdy shoes, the floor is uneven.
