Take a glimpse into a thousand-year-old forest where nature determines its own development.
Boubínský prales is one of the oldest and most valuable forest reserves in Europe. It lies in the heart of the Šumava mountains, near the village of Zátoň. The forest was declared a protected area as early as 1858, which allowed it to be preserved in an almost pristine state. Its dominant feature is Boubín (1362 m above sea level), from whose summit a breathtaking view of the Šumava landscape opens up.
A nature trail is prepared for visitors, leading through the most interesting parts of the forest. During the walk, you will see giant trees (for example the famous Král smrků), decaying trunks covered in moss, and typical Šumava flora and fauna. Do not forget to visit Boubínské jezírko, a picturesque peat bog with pools that adds to the mystical atmosphere of the place.
Practical tips: We recommend sturdy footwear and plenty of time – the circuit is about 4 km long. Entrance is free, but parking is paid. Boubínský prales is open year-round, with the ideal time to visit being spring and autumn, when the forest takes on beautiful colors.
