Baťa's Skyscraper

About this place

Explore the icon of functionalism, the 21st floor with observation deck and café where the history of the shoe empire was written.

Baťa's Skyscraper, also known as Jednadvacítka, is the first Czechoslovak skyscraper and a symbol of the business boom of the Baťa company. It was built between 1937 and 1938 according to the design of architect Vladimír Karfík and served as the administrative center of the shoe concern. Its height of 77.5 meters and 17 floors made it the tallest building in Czechoslovakia at the time.

A unique feature of the building is the air-conditioned office of the company head in the form of a mobile cabin measuring 6 × 6 meters, which moves between floors. Today the building houses the Regional Authority of the Zlín Region and a popular café with an observation terrace on the 21st floor, offering a circular view of the city and the Hostýnské Hills.

Visitors can access the observation deck and an exhibition on the history of the building and the Baťa company. Entry is through the ground floor reception, and an elevator takes you to the 21st floor for a fee. It is open daily; the ideal time to visit is in clear weather. We recommend combining it with a walk around Baťa's Zlín and a visit to other functionalist buildings.
