The most important Marian pilgrimage site in Moravia, featuring a Baroque basilica, the Stations of the Cross, and beautiful views from the Hostýn Hills.
The Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary at Svatý Hostýn is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic. Its history dates back to the 13th century, when, according to legend, the Virgin Mary helped local people repel a Tatar invasion. The current Baroque basilica, built in the 18th century to a design by Tomáš Gravani, houses a precious statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus and features rich decoration, including frescoes by Josef Sadler.
In addition to the basilica itself, you can climb the observation tower for a magnificent panorama of Haná, Valašsko, and on clear days even the Jeseníky or Beskydy Mountains. A walk along the Stations of the Cross, with works by Dušan Jurkovič, is both a spiritual and artistic experience. The area also includes a spring with supposedly miraculous water.
Practical information: The basilica is open year-round, but the main pilgrimage season culminates on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (August 15). You can park at the lot below the summit and continue on foot or by shuttle. We recommend comfortable footwear and sun protection in the summer, as exploring the site can take several hours.
