The most important pilgrimage site in Moravia with a rich Cyrillo-Methodian tradition and magnificent Baroque architecture.
The Basilica of Velehrad, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Saints Cyril and Methodius, is the spiritual heart of Moravia. Its origins date back to the 13th century when a Cistercian monastery was founded here. Today's magnificent Baroque form of the church from 1681–1735 reflects the significance of the place associated with the arrival of the apostles Cyril and Methodius to Great Moravia.
The interior captivates with rich decoration – ceiling frescoes, stuccoes and sculptures by leading Baroque artists. The crypt houses the relics of saints, including those of Saint Methodius. Every year on July 5, the main pilgrimage takes place, attracting thousands of pilgrims. The complex also includes a monastery, a lapidarium and a vast Baroque garden.
The basilica is easily accessible by car and bus from Uherské Hradiště. Parking is available at the central parking lot, from which it is just a few minutes' walk to the basilica. Tours are held daily, admission is free. Do not forget to visit the Bible Museum and the pilgrim house.
