Babiččino údolí

About this place

The picturesque landscape of Babiččino údolí will enchant you with its romantic corners, history connected to Božena Němcová, and preserved folk architecture in the heart of eastern Bohemia.

Babiččino údolí, stretching along the Úpa River near Ratibořice, is inextricably linked to the work of Božena Němcová and her most famous book, The Grandmother. This charming landscape, which inspired the writer to write the novel, still breathes the atmosphere of the 19th century and offers a unique combination of natural beauty and cultural monuments.

As you walk through the valley, you will encounter iconic places known from literature – Staré bělidlo, Viktorčin splav, the mill, or Ratibořice Castle with its adjacent park. The area also includes a sculpture group of The Grandmother with her grandchildren and a monument to Božena Němcová. The entire area is declared a national cultural monument and is accessible year-round thanks to marked tourist trails.

The best starting point is the town of Česká Skalice, from where you can reach the valley on foot via a pleasant walk, by bike, or by a sightseeing train. During the season, the interiors of the castle and other buildings are open, so you can explore exhibitions dedicated to rural life and the writer herself. Admission varies by circuit, and parking is paid at the main entrance. We recommend setting aside at least half a day for undisturbed wanderings through this poetic landscape.
