Cerkno, located in the picturesque valley of the Cerkljansko hills, is a town with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Its surroundings, however, became most famous during World War II, when the legendary Franja Partisan Hospital was established in the deep forests – a secret medical facility hidden in a gorge that saved hundreds of lives. Today, this site is a unique monument of European importance.
In addition to Franja, Cerkno offers other attractions – a visit to the Town Museum, which presents the life of local people in the past, or a walk through the historic center with the Church of St. Anne. Nature lovers will appreciate the surrounding hills crisscrossed with hiking trails, and in winter, the Cerkno ski resort with modern infrastructure attracts enthusiasts.
