About this place
An impressive medieval castle above the town of Celje offers beautiful views of the Savinja river and surrounding hills, rich history, and engaging exhibitions.
Celjski grad, once the largest and most important castle in Slovenia, was the seat of the powerful Counts of Celje, who in the 14th and 15th centuries were among the most influential noble families in the region. Its origins date back to the 12th century when a simple defensive tower stood here, but it was gradually expanded and rebuilt into an extensive fortress complex. After the extinction of the family in 1456, the castle fell into decay, but underwent conservation in the 19th and 20th centuries, and today it is a protected cultural monument.
During your visit, do not miss climbing the main tower (Stolp) with breathtaking views of the town of Celje, the Savinja river, and the surrounding hills of Styria. Inside, there is an exhibition about life in the castle, the history of the Counts of Celje, and archaeological finds. You can also see the castle chapel, courtyard, and fortifications. During the summer season, knight tournaments and cultural events are held here, reviving the medieval atmosphere.
For Czech tourists, the castle is easily accessible, located just a few kilometers from the A1 motorway between Ljubljana and Maribor. From the center of Celje, a steep trail leads to the castle (about 20 minutes on foot), or you can use a car and park at the parking lot below the castle. We recommend combining a visit to the castle with a walk through the charming old town of Celje, where you will find many cafes and restaurants. Admission is reasonable, and the castle is open year-round, until late hours in the summer months.
