Blejski otok (Bled Island)

About this place

A fairy-tale island in the middle of the lake with the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, accessible by traditional pletna boat.

Bled Island is one of the most iconic places in Slovenia. In the middle of the turquoise Lake Bled lies a picturesque islet with the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, attracting visitors from all over the world. The island has a rich history dating back to the 8th century, when a pagan sacrificial site stood here. The present form of the church dates from the 17th century and is decorated with valuable frescoes and a gilded main altar.

The biggest attraction is the wishing bell, located in the upper part of the church tower. Legend has it that whoever rings it will have their wish come true. The island can only be reached by traditional wooden pletna boats, operated by local ferrymen. The ride takes about 15 minutes and offers beautiful views of Bled Castle and the surrounding Julian Alps.

For Czech tourists, it is good to know that the boats depart from several places around the lake, most often from the promenade near Hotel Park or from the campsite below the castle. We recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when there are fewer tourists. Admission to the church and tower is charged, but walking around the island and swimming in the lake are free. Combine your visit with exploring Bled Castle and tasting the traditional cream cake (kremšnita) at the local pastry shop.
