Chleb (1,646 m above sea level) is an iconic peak in the main ridge of Kriváňská Malá Fatra. Its name does not come from bread, but from an old Slovak word for rock or cliff. Due to its location and accessibility, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations – from the summit, panoramic views open up over the entire mountain range, Roháče, and Veľký Choč.
The area is part of the Chleb National Nature Reserve, protecting rare alpine meadows, stone seas, and dwarf pine growths. On the northern slopes, you can encounter traces of ancient avalanches that shape the terrain. Beneath the summit in the saddle stands the cozy Chata pod Chlebom, a popular stop with refreshments and accommodation.
The best starting points are from the villages of Terchová (parking in Vrátna valley) or Štefanová. From Vrátná, a cable car goes to Snilovské sedlo, from where it is just a pleasant hour's walk along the red ridge trail to Chleb. For Czech tourists, the proximity of the border and good signage are advantages. We recommend a full-day ridge crossing from Chleb to Veľký Kriváň.
