Iconic mountain hut on the shore of Zelené pleso – ideal base for hikes in the High Tatras with stunning views of the surrounding peaks.
Chata pri Zelenom plese is one of the most famous and popular mountain huts in the entire Tatras. It stands directly on the shore of the beautiful Zelené pleso in the Dolina Zeleného plesa valley under the majestic walls of Kežmarský štít. The first shelter was built here already in 1897; the current appearance of the hut dates from 1924 and has undergone several modernizations, yet retains its traditional mountain character.
The hut offers accommodation, a restaurant with excellent Slovak cuisine (try the local halušky or blueberry dumplings) and an unforgettable atmosphere. It is a starting point for a number of more challenging hikes – to Jahňací štít, Velká Svišťovka, or via Sedlo pod Svišťovkou to the Dolina Kežmarskej Bielej vody valley. Less demanding tourists can walk around the lake and enjoy views of the surrounding peaks.
For Czech tourists, the easiest access is from Tatranská Lesná (by car or train), from where a yellow marked trail via Šalviový prameň and Biela voda leads to the hut in about 3 hours. We recommend setting out early in the morning – the hut is on a busy route and is often crowded in the afternoon. Payments only in cash, mobile signal is limited. Bring a good mood and a camera – Zelené pleso at dawn is one of the most photogenic places in the Tatras!
