Čertovica

About this place

A mountain saddle in the heart of the Low Tatras, popular starting point for hiking and skiing. Offers breathtaking views and access to the highest peaks of the range.

Čertovica (1232 m a.s.l.) is a significant mountain saddle in the Low Tatras, separating the Ďumbier and Prašivá massifs. Since ancient times, it has served as a natural connection between Liptov and Horehronie. Today, the busy I/66 road passes through it, which is often closed in winter due to snow. At the saddle, there is the mountain hotel Čertovica with a restaurant, providing facilities for tourists and skiers.

In the summer season, Čertovica is an ideal starting point for ascents to the highest peaks of the Low Tatras – Ďumbier (2043 m) and Chopok (2024 m) via the red-marked ridge trail. The ascent to Ďumbier takes approximately 30 minutes and is rewarded with panoramic views. The area is a paradise for lovers of high-altitude hiking, cycling, and cross-country skiing in winter.

In winter, the area turns into a small ski resort with several slopes suitable mainly for families and less experienced skiers. Due to the altitude, snow cover often lasts from December to April. For Czech tourists, the saddle is easily accessible by car from Liptovský Hrádok (20 km) or from Brezno (25 km). Parking is possible directly at the hotel, but we recommend arriving early during the main season.
