Castle Považie

Čachtický hrad (Čachtice)

About this place

Extensive ruins of a Gothic castle shrouded in legends about the bloodthirsty Countess Elizabeth Báthory, towering above the village of Čachtice in the Považský Inovec mountain range.

Čachtický hrad was built in the first half of the 13th century as a guard fortress. It experienced its most famous era at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, when it was owned by the Hungarian noblewoman Elizabeth Báthory, notorious for her alleged atrocities – according to legend, she tortured and murdered young girls here. These dark stories still attract many tourists to the castle today.

The castle was damaged during Rákóczi's uprising in 1708 and has been decaying ever since. Massive walls, bastions, and a deep cellar have been preserved, offering views of the wide Danube Lowland. A walk through the extensive grounds allows you to soak up the medieval atmosphere and explore the remains of various buildings.

For Czech tourists, the castle is easily accessible – about an hour's drive from the Břeclav–Brodské border crossing. Parking is available in the village of Čachtice, from where a marked trail leads (2 km, elevation gain approx. 200 m). Don't forget sturdy shoes; the entrance fee is symbolic, and historical events and night tours occasionally take place on the premises.
