About this place
Explore the underground kingdom of the Low Tatras with rich stalactite decoration and underground lakes. Ideal trip for families and experienced cavers.
Bystrianska jaskyňa is one of the most famous accessible caves in Slovakia. It is located in the southern part of the Low Tatras, in the cadastre of the village of Bystrá. Its corridors will lead you through a fairy-tale world of stalactites, sinter lakes, and colorfully lit domes. During the approximately one-hour tour, you will see unique formations such as the Ringing stalactite or the massive Hell's Dome.
The cave was discovered in 1926 and gradually opened to the public. Today it offers two tour circuits: a shorter one for regular visitors and a longer one with a boat ride on an underground stream for the more adventurous. Interestingly, scenes from the Czech fairy-tale Princess from the Mill were filmed here. For Czech tourists, the journey is easy – from Brezno it's just a few kilometers by car or bus.
Practical tip: remember sturdy shoes and a jacket, the temperature in the cave is around 6 °C. Parking is directly at the entrance, where you can also find refreshments. In the area, we also recommend visiting other beauties of Horehronie, such as the ski resort Mýto pod Ďumbierom or hiking trails in the Low Tatras National Park.
