Bratislavský hrad

About this place

Dominant of Bratislava with rich history, offering beautiful views of the Danube and surroundings.

Bratislavský hrad rises on a hill above the Danube and forms the unmistakable silhouette of the capital of Slovakia. Its history dates back to the time of the Celts and Romans, and its current form comes from a Gothic-Renaissance reconstruction in the 15th–16th centuries. For Czech tourists, it is easily accessible on foot from the historic center and offers a unique view of the city and the surrounding vineyards.

Inside the castle, the Slovak National Museum – Historical Museum houses exhibitions from prehistory through Great Moravia to modern history. The highlight is a replica of the Hungarian coronation jewels and an exhibition about life at the royal court. Don't miss the climb to the Crown Tower, which on clear days offers a circular view reaching the Alpine peaks and the Austrian borderlands.

Tip for visitors: The ideal time to visit is in the morning when there are fewer people in the courtyard. Combine the visit with a walk in the adjacent Zámocká Garden or continue to Devín Castle, which is just a short distance downstream on the Danube. During strong wind, prepare for refreshing gusts on the observation terraces!
