The Basilica of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary in Šaštín is the most important Marian pilgrimage site in Slovakia. Its history dates back to the 16th century, when a miraculous statue of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was venerated here. In 1733, the church was elevated to a minor basilica, and today it is the destination of thousands of pilgrims.
Architecturally, it is a Baroque church with two towers from the 18th century. Inside, you can admire beautiful frescoes, the main altar with the statue of the Virgin Mary, and other works of art. The complex also includes a pilgrimage house and a Way of the Cross.
For Czech tourists, Šaštín is easily accessible by car via the D2 motorway from Brno, with a journey of about 1.5 hours. The basilica is open daily, and services are held regularly. We recommend visiting during the main pilgrimages, for example in September on the feast of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows.
