Majestic peak of the Western Tatras with beautiful views of Liptov and surrounding summits.
Baranec (2184 m a.s.l.) is a prominent peak in the main ridge of the Western Tatras. Its name refers to a ram, and due to its location it offers some of the most beautiful views of the Liptov Basin and surrounding peaks. It is a popular tourist destination that can be conquered in a single day.
The most common ascent route starts from Žiarska dolina (from the Žiarska chata hut) via Žiarske sedlo and then continues along the red-marked trail on the ridge. The path is well-marked, of moderate difficulty, and suitable for experienced hikers. The final part involves a rocky section with chains. The reward is panoramic views of Roháče, Low Tatras, and in the distance, the High Tatras.
Practical tip for Czech tourists: You can drive to Žiar (paid parking at the entrance to the valley). From the bus stop in Žiar, it takes 45 minutes to reach the hut. The ideal period for climbing is from June to October; in winter there is an avalanche danger and mountaineering equipment is required. Don't forget sturdy footwear, enough water and food; refreshments are available at Žiarska chata.
