Chochołów is an exceptionally well-preserved village in the Polish Podhale region, known for its 19th-century wooden houses that are regularly washed with soap and water. A walk through this living open-air museum village will transport you centuries back. The dominant feature is the wooden Church of St. Jacek, dating from 1853, a typical example of Podhale sacred architecture.
The village is also known for the Chochołów Uprising of 1846, commemorated by the local museum in a traditional cottage. Visitors can admire not only the exteriors of the houses but also their interiors with period furnishings. In summer, folklore festivals and demonstrations of traditional crafts take place here.
For Czech tourists, Chochołów is easily accessible from border crossings in northern Slovakia. We recommend combining a visit with a trip to Zakopane or the Chochołowskie Thermal Baths, located nearby. Don't forget to taste the local oscypek goat cheese, typical of the entire Podhale region.
