Chełmno

Chełmno, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Poland, lies on the banks of the Vistula River in the picturesque landscape of Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. Its history dates back to the 10th century, but it experienced its greatest prosperity under the rule of the Teutonic Order, who founded the center of the Chełmno Land here in the 13th century. The town has retained its original urban layout with a regular street grid and well-preserved Gothic and Renaissance buildings.

The dominant feature is the massive parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, one of the most important Gothic brick churches in the region, which houses the famous reliquary of Saint Valentine. This makes Chełmno a significant pilgrimage site for lovers. On the spacious Market Square stands the Renaissance town hall with a Baroque tower, surrounded by burgher houses with arcades. It is worth walking along the remnants of the city walls with towers and the Grudziądz Gate, from which a view of the river opens.

For Czech tourists, Chełmno is easily accessible from Toruń (approx. 40 km) and offers an authentic medieval experience without crowds.
