Cerkev sv. Michaela Archanděla ve Smolniku (Cerkiew w Smolniku)

About this place

An 18th-century wooden church, UNESCO World Heritage site, set in the picturesque Bieszczady landscape. An example of Boyko architecture and the spiritual heritage of the region.

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Smolnik is one of the most valuable wooden churches in Poland and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2013. It was built in 1791 in the typical Boyko style, characteristic of the Eastern Carpathians. Originally it served the Greek Catholic community, later it was also used by the Orthodox, and today it is accessible as a museum of sacred art.

Thanks to its harmonious three-part layout and shingle roof, which seems to grow out of the surrounding nature, it offers an unforgettable view. The interior hides original polychrome and an iconostasis from the 18th century. The belfry next to the church dates from the same period and completes the picturesque ensemble. The tour draws you into the spiritual atmosphere of the old Bieszczady.

For Czech tourists, Smolnik is easily accessible by car via the road from Komańcza or Cisna. We recommend combining the visit with other wooden churches on the UNESCO trail, such as Turzańsk or Chotyniec. Admission is voluntary, but it is advisable to check the opening hours, especially outside the season. Don't forget your camera – the views of the San River valley are breathtaking.
