The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, better known as St. Mary's Church, is one of the most important monuments in Gdańsk and all of Poland. This monumental Gothic structure, built from the 14th to the 16th century, boasts the title of the largest brick church in the world – it can hold up to 25,000 worshippers. Its 78-meter-high tower, after climbing 409 steps, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and its surroundings.
The interior conceals countless treasures, among which stands out the late Gothic high altar from 1517, the work of Master Michael, or the astronomical clock from the 15th century. Also noteworthy are the set of Baroque organs and a number of valuable epitaphs. The church survived war damage and is now carefully restored, so visitors can admire the original star vaults and white walls contrasting with rich decoration.
For Czech tourists, the basilica is easily accessible from the main train station, located in the center of the Old Town. Entry to the church is free, while climbing the tower requires a small fee. We recommend visiting in the morning when there are fewer people, and combining it with a walk along the Royal Route. Don't forget to also check out the nearby Motława waterfront with the famous crane.
