Basilica of Our Lady of Licheń (Sanktuarium w Licheniu)

About this place

The largest church in Poland and one of the most important pilgrimage sites, known for the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary.

The pilgrimage complex in Licheń Stary is the spiritual heart of Greater Poland. Its history dates back to 1813, when the image of the Virgin Mary appeared to a local blacksmith. The wooden church soon became insufficient for the influx of pilgrims, so between 1994 and 2004 a monumental basilica was built, ranking among the largest sacral buildings in the world.

The dominant feature is the giant golden dome and a 141-meter-high tower with an observation terrace. Inside, the rich decoration and an organ with more than 15,000 pipes amaze visitors. You can also see Golgotha – an artificial hill with the Stations of the Cross, or the original wooden church. The miraculous image of Our Lady of Licheń is placed in a glass case on the main altar.

For Czech tourists, Licheń is easily accessible by car from the A2 highway (exit Konin). Parking is paid, entry to the basilica is free. The complex offers refreshments and accommodation for pilgrims. We highly recommend climbing the tower – on a clear day you can see for dozens of kilometers.
