Augustów Canal (Kanał Augustowski)

The Augustów Canal, built between 1824 and 1839, is a masterpiece of Polish hydrotechnology and a unique natural attraction. It connects the Vistula and Neman river basins and originally served for transporting timber and grain. Today it is a popular destination for water tourism, cycling, and history enthusiasts. Navigating the entire canal by kayak or sightseeing boat offers an unforgettable experience – you will pass through eighteen locks, most of which are still operational with their original wooden mechanisms.

The canal route runs through the picturesque landscape of the Augustów Primeval Forest and a system of lakes such as Necko, Białe, and Studzieniczne. Along the way you encounter technical gems, such as the Przewięź lock with a wooden bridge, or the Paniewo lock system, which overcomes a height difference of 9 meters. In the town of Augustów you can visit the canal museum and learn more about its history and unique construction. The area is crisscrossed with marked hiking and cycling trails, so you can also enjoy it on foot or by bike.

For Czech tourists, the Augustów Canal is an ideal destination for an extended weekend. The nearest border crossing from the Czech Republic is in Královec or via the Slovak border. The drive from Prague takes approximately 8 hours. Accommodation can be found directly in Augustów, from where you have easy access to kayak and boat rentals. Don't forget that the canal is navigable from May to October, and if you want to go through the locks, set aside a full day. During the trip, it's worth stopping for a picnic on the shore of one of the crystal-clear lakes.
