Chiemsee (Bavarian Sea)

Chiemsee, nicknamed the Bavarian Sea, is the largest lake in Bavaria and a popular destination for Czech tourists. It stretches between alpine views and green meadows, offering swimming, windsurfing, and boat rides. The main attractions are three islands: Herreninsel with its magnificent palace, Fraueninsel with a monastery and an idyllic village, and the tiny Krautinsel.

Herreninsel houses Herrenchiemsee Palace, built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the style of Versailles. A tour of the Hall of Mirrors and the extensive French gardens takes you back to the era of royal luxury. On Fraueninsel, you can sample local specialties, visit the Baroque church, and admire handmade ceramics.

For Czech tourists, Chiemsee is easily accessible from the D5 motorway towards Munich; you can relax on the beaches near the towns of Prien, Gstadt, or Seebruck. We recommend a full-day boat trip to both inhabited islands; it is advisable to book palace tickets in advance. Don't forget your swimsuit and camera!
