Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous border crossing between the American and Soviet sectors of Berlin. Today, it is a place where you can see a replica of the guard booth with sandbags, the famous sign "You are leaving the American sector", and learn about dramatic escapes from East Germany.
On site, there is the Checkpoint Charlie Museum (Mauermuseum), which documents the history of the Berlin Wall and the Cold War. The exhibition includes original items such as a balloon used by families to flee to the West, tunnel escape routes, and hidden compartments in cars. The museum is private and admission is charged, but the checkpoint itself can be visited for free.
For Czech tourists, it is the heart of Berlin, easily accessible by metro (U6, Kochstraße station). Combine your visit with the nearby DDR Museum or a walk along Friedrichstraße. We recommend an early morning visit to avoid crowds, and don't forget a souvenir – a stamp from the checkpoint.
