Budyšín (Bautzen)

Budyšín, perched on a rocky headland above the Spree River, is one of the most beautiful historic towns in Saxony. Its origins date back to the 10th century, and it still boasts an impressive medieval fortification with numerous towers. Walk along the ramparts, admire the Renaissance Ortenburg, and be sure to visit the Leaning Tower, which with its tilt recalls that of Pisa.

The town is also a center of Sorbian culture – notice the bilingual signs and visit the Sorbian Museum. Taste the local specialty, Bautzen mustard, made according to traditional recipes. The Cathedral of St. Peter is also worth a visit, a unique place where Catholics and Protestants have shared space for centuries.

For Czech tourists, Budyšín is easily accessible by car via the D10/D4 highway from Prague or from Liberec. Parking is available on the edge of the center, from which it is just a few minutes' walk to the historic core. Cycling enthusiasts will appreciate the Spree Cycle Path running along the river. Don't forget to explore the picturesque corners of the Old Town with its half-timbered houses.
