About this place
Ride a historic steam train to the top of Brocken mountain and enjoy panoramic views of Harz National Park.
Brockenbahn is a scenic narrow-gauge railway in the heart of the Harz Mountains, carrying visitors to the legendary Brocken mountain (1,141 m) since 1899. The route starts in the picturesque town of Wernigerode and winds through deep forests, past babbling brooks and rocky cliffs to the summit, where a breathtaking circular view opens up.
Riding the steam train is a unique experience – old locomotives puff steam and the whistle echoes across the landscape. At the Brocken summit, you can visit the historic station, a meteorological observatory, and a transmission tower. Enjoy the views of the national park, and on clear days, you can see as far as the Lüneburg Heath.
Practical tips: The best boarding points are Wernigerode, Drei Annen Hohne, or Schierke. Buy your ticket online, especially on weekends and holidays when it gets crowded. From the Czech Republic, the best way is to drive to Wernigerode (approx. 3 hours from Prague) or take a train with a change in Dresden and Magdeburg.
