Boppard

About this place

A picturesque historic town on the left bank of the Rhine, famous for its winemaking tradition, well-preserved city walls, and breathtaking views of the river's meander from the cable car to Gedeonseck.

Boppard is one of the most charming towns on the Middle Rhine, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its history dates back to Roman times, when the fort of Bodobrica was established here. The remains of the Roman fortifications are among the best-preserved in the entire Rhineland. The medieval center is encircled by an almost complete ring of walls with towers and gates, giving the town its unmistakable atmosphere.

The landmark is the parish church of St. Severus with its Romanesque crypt and late Gothic choir. For lovers of views, it is a must to take the chairlift to the summit of Gedeonseck, from where there is a legendary view of the largest meander of the Rhine – the so-called Boppard Bend. In summer, numerous wine bars and restaurants along the promenade invite you to sit and taste Rhine wines, especially Riesling.

For Czech tourists, Boppard is easily accessible by train from Koblenz or Mainz, or by car via the left-bank federal highway B9. The town is also a popular stop for cruise ships. Accommodation is offered by many guesthouses and hotels directly in the historic center, ideal as a base for hiking tours through the surrounding vineyards or cycling trips along the Rhine Cycle Route.
