Blautopf (Blue Spring)

About this place

An impressive karst spring with crystal-clear blue water, 22 meters deep, shrouded in legends.

The Blautopf, also known as the Blue Spring, is one of the most beautiful karst springs in Germany. It is located in the picturesque town of Blaubeuren at the foot of the Swabian Alb. This source of the river Blau stands out for its intense turquoise color, caused by fine limestone sediment and a depth of up to 22 meters. The average flow rate is an impressive 2,000 liters per second.

The spring is steeped in legends, the most famous being the story of the beautiful Lau, a water nymph placed there by the writer Eduard Mörike. Beneath the surface lies the extensive cave system Blauhöhle, discovered only in 2006, which attracts speleologists. Nearby, you will find the Benedictine monastery Blaubeuren with its rich history and a museum of prehistory, where you can admire the famous Venus of Willendorf in life size.

For Czech tourists, Blaubeuren is easily accessible by car via the A8 highway from Munich or by train from Ulm. Visitor parking is just a few minutes' walk from the spring. The ideal time to visit is spring, when the surrounding rocks are adorned with blooming pasque flowers. The combination of mystical nature, history, and romantic atmosphere makes the Blautopf an unforgettable excursion.
