Picturesque Biggesee lake in the heart of Sauerland offers water sports, cycling trails and views from the Biggedamm Dam. Ideal for an active holiday and relaxation.
Biggesee is a reservoir in North Rhine-Westphalia, created between 1956 and 1965 by damming the rivers Bigge and Lenne. It serves for water supply, flood protection and recreation. With an area of 8.9 km² and a maximum depth of 52 m, it is one of the largest lakes in the region. The surrounding hills, forested shores and clear water create an ideal environment for hiking.
Visitors can enjoy a scenic boat trip, rent a pedal boat, go windsurfing or fishing. A 45 km long cycling trail, the Biggesee-Rundweg, runs around the lake, offering beautiful panoramic views. An architectural gem is the Biggedamm – a 640 m long and 52 m high dam, from which a view of the lake and valley opens up. History lovers should not miss the Waldenburg Castle or the Atta Cave in nearby Attendorn.
For Czech tourists, Biggesee is easily accessible – only about 2.5 hours drive from the Czech border via the D5 and A44 motorways. There are many campsites, guesthouses and hotels in the area. We recommend a visit from May to September when all attractions are open. Don't forget to bring your swimsuit, bike and camera – the view from the Biggeblick observation deck (90 m above the lake) is breathtaking.
