The Bauhaus School, founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius, moved from Weimar to Dessau in 1925, where its most famous building complex was created. The Bauhaus building, completed in 1926, embodies functionalist architecture – glass workshop wings, steel framework, and iconic lettering on the facade. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Visitors can explore authentic interiors including classrooms, workshops, and the famous staircase. The museum displays furniture, design objects, and documentation of the Bauhaus era. Also noteworthy are the adjacent Masters' Houses (Meisterhäuser), where famous teachers like Kandinsky and Klee lived.
For Czech tourists: Dessau lies on the route between Prague and Berlin, by train from Prague via Dresden (transfer), the journey takes about 3.5 hours. It is a 20-minute walk from the station to the Bauhaus building. We highly recommend a guided tour in English; a Czech guide is usually not available. Admission to the main building is around €8, with student discounts.
