An impressive rock formation with the stone bridge Basteibrücke offers breathtaking views of the Elbe canyon and the surrounding rock towers.
Bastei is a breathtaking rock formation rising 194 meters above the Elbe River. Its dominant feature is the famous stone bridge Basteibrücke from 1851, which connects the individual rock towers and replaced the original wooden bridge. The site was already settled in ancient times, as evidenced by the remains of Neurathen Castle, the largest rock castle in Saxon Switzerland, which was located here.
From the bridge and the surrounding viewpoints, a stunning panoramic view opens up over the deep Elbe valley and the shimmering river surface lined with bizarre sandstone towers. Walk along the well-maintained paths, climb up to Ferdinand's Stone, and admire the unique interplay of natural forces and human architecture. Bastei is undoubtedly one of the most photogenic places in all of Germany.
For Czech tourists, Bastei is easily accessible: from Dresden, it is about 40 minutes by car via the A17 motorway, parking is paid (approx. 3–5 €). Alternatively, you can take the train to the spa town of Rathen, then a ferry across the Elbe and on foot up a steep climb to the bridge. Avoid the main tourist peak – early morning or late afternoon is ideal. Don't forget sturdy shoes and a camera!
