Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers (Vierzehnheiligen)

About this place

An impressive Rococo pilgrimage church above the Main River, dedicated to the fourteen holy helpers, with a magnificent interior and altar by Balthasar Neumann.

The Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers near Bad Staffelstein is one of the most important pilgrimage shrines in Germany and a masterpiece of Franconian Rococo. It was built from 1743 to 1772 according to the plans of the famous architect Balthasar Neumann and his son Franz on the site where, in 1445, the Christ Child is said to have appeared surrounded by the fourteen holy helpers. The church is dedicated to these saints, invoked in times of need, and still draws thousands of pilgrims from all over Europe.

The interior of the basilica impresses with its play of light, rich frescoes, and stuccowork. Inside is the famous Altar of Grace (Gnadenaltar) with statuettes of the fourteen saints, placed directly above the site of the apparition. Also noteworthy are the monumental high altar, pulpit, and organ. The basilica is free to enter; guided tours are available by appointment. For Czech tourists, it is convenient to combine a visit with a trip to nearby Bamberg (40 km) or to the Bad Staffelstein spa.

Parking is available directly at the basilica (paid). Access is barrier-free. The complex includes a monastery and a pilgrimage shop. From the observation terrace, there is a beautiful view of the Main Valley. The basilica is about 130 km from the Czech border, most easily accessible by car via the A73 motorway (exit 13).
