Impressive anhydrite cave with unique formations and a legend about Emperor Barbarossa, who sleeps here.
Barbarossahöhle is a unique anhydrite cave in the Kyffhäuser mountain range in Thuringia. It was discovered in 1865 during copper mining and has attracted visitors since the beginning with its special atmosphere. According to legend, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa sleeps underground, giving the place a mysterious touch.
The tour route is approximately 800 meters long and leads through fascinating passages with stalactites, gypsum crystals, and colorful minerals. The biggest attraction is a lake where the surrounding formations are mirrored. The temperature in the cave is constant 9 °C, so warm clothing is recommended.
The cave is located near the Kyffhäuser Monument, which commemorates the unification of Germany. For Czech tourists, it is ideal to combine a visit to both sites. Parking is free, guided tours (in German) depart every 30 minutes and last about 50 minutes. Suitable for families with children.
