Bamberg

About this place

A picturesque historic town on seven hills, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with unique architecture and famous smoked beer.

Bamberg is one of the most beautiful German towns, located in the region of Upper Franconia on seven hills, which is why it is often called the 'Franconian Rome'. Since 1993, the entire historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town has retained its medieval character with half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, and numerous monuments. From the 11th century, Bamberg was an important bishopric and imperial city, which is reflected in its architectural wealth.

Main attractions include the impressive Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George with the famous Bamberg Horseman, a mysterious 13th-century statue. The unusual old town hall, built on an island in the middle of the Regnitz River, is a symbol of the town. Little Venice, a picturesque quarter of fishermen's houses, invites for walks. The New Residence with its rose garden offers beautiful views. You must try the local specialty – smoked beer (Rauchbier), which is brewed by several traditional breweries.

For Czech tourists, Bamberg is easily accessible by car via the D5 motorway through Rozvadov; the journey takes about 3 hours from Pilsen. The town is ideal for a day trip or a weekend stay. Parking is possible on the edge of the center; the historic core is comfortably explored on foot. Don't forget to try local specialties such as Franconian sausages. We recommend a visit in spring or summer when the town is in bloom.
