Augsburg Town Hall (Augsburger Rathaus)

About this place

A Renaissance jewel with a breathtaking Golden Hall, which is one of the most beautiful town halls in Germany. A tour will transport you to the days of the Imperial Diets.

The Augsburg Town Hall, built between 1615 and 1624 according to the design of Elias Holl, is considered one of the most important secular Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. Its dominant feature is the magnificent Golden Hall with rich stucco decoration, gilded coffered ceiling, and wall paintings, which served as a ceremonial space for the Imperial Diets. The town hall was badly damaged during World War II, but after extensive reconstruction it shines again in full glory and offers visitors an authentic insight into the city's history.

During the tour, you can admire not only the Golden Hall but also other historic rooms and an exhibition on the history of Augsburg. The neighboring Perlachturm is also worth a visit, offering a panoramic view of the city and surroundings. The town hall still serves as the seat of the Augsburg City Council, so history and the present merge here.

For Czech tourists, Augsburg is easily accessible – it lies just a few hours' drive from Prague or Brno and is well connected by rail. The town hall is located in the very center of the city, a short distance from the main train station, and is an ideal starting point for exploring other sights such as the famous Fuggerei or the Cathedral of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. Entry to the town hall is free; visiting the Golden Hall requires a small admission fee, and we recommend checking the opening hours in advance, especially during public holidays.
