Asamkirche, officially the Church of St. John of Nepomuk, is one of the most important Baroque gems in Munich. It was built between 1733 and 1746 by the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam as their private chapel. Originally not intended as a public church, it was opened to the public after pressure from local residents. Due to its magnificent interior, it is considered a masterpiece of late Baroque in southern Germany.
During your visit, you will be captivated by the rich stucco decoration, frescoes, and illusionistic paintings that transform the cramped space into a heavenly theater. The high altar with a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, angel statues, and gilded elements create an impression of splendor and spiritual uplift. Special attention should be paid to the pulpit and the organ, which are also masterfully decorated. The church is dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk, a Czech patron saint, which adds interest for visitors from Bohemia.
The church is located on Sendlinger Straße in central Munich, just a few minutes' walk from Marienplatz. Admission is free, but please respect that it is an active church – a quiet visit is recommended. Due to its small size, it can be crowded in the main season, so it is better to come early in the morning.
