Annaberg-Buchholz

About this place

Historic mining town in the heart of the Ore Mountains with a rich tradition, beautiful historic center and unique atmosphere.

Annaberg-Buchholz is a picturesque town located directly on the Czech-German border, deep in the heart of the Ore Mountains. It was founded in 1945 by merging two historic towns – Annaberg and Buchholz – and still enchants visitors with its preserved medieval core, rich mining past and tradition of lace making, wooden toys and Christmas decorations. Its history is inextricably linked with silver mining, which in the 16th century turned this place into one of the richest towns in Saxony.

The town's landmark is the late Gothic Church of St. Anne (St. Annenkirche), also known as the 'Cathedral of the Ore Mountains'. Inside you will discover a unique altar made of linden wood, which is among the most important sacral monuments in Germany. Near the church is the Museum of Anne (Manufaktur der Träume), which presents the tradition of Ore Mountain Christmas in an appealing way – from wooden figurines to famous pyramids and arches. History lovers will also appreciate a tour of the Buchholz water hammer mill Frohnauer Hammer, which recalls the famous mining era.

For Czech tourists, Annaberg-Buchholz is an ideal excursion destination also thanks to its easy accessibility – it lies just a few kilometers from the Boží Dar border crossing. The town offers plenty of cafés, restaurants and shops with traditional products. We recommend climbing the Pöhlberg observation tower, from where a magnificent panoramic view opens onto both the Czech and Saxon sides of the Ore Mountains. In winter, the area attracts with cross-country trails, in summer with countless cycling and hiking trails.
