Amrum (North Frisian Island)

About this place

Picturesque North Frisian island with endless sandy beaches, dunes, and rich fauna, ideal for relaxation and active holidays.

Amrum Island is one of the hidden gems of the North Frisian Islands in the North Sea. Its landmark is the majestic Amrum Lighthouse, one of the tallest in Germany, offering a magnificent view of the surrounding dunes and the Wadden Sea. The island is known for its pristine nature, extensive sandy beaches on Kniepsand, and diverse birdlife, making it part of the UNESCO-protected Wadden Sea area.

When visiting Amrum, it is worth exploring the picturesque villages of Nebel, Norddorf, and Wittdün with traditional Frisian architecture and thatched roofs, where old Frisian traditions still live. The island is ideal for cycling, as it is crisscrossed by a network of cycle paths, and with car traffic prohibited, there is a peaceful atmosphere. In summer, Amrum comes alive with festivals like the traditional Biikebrennen, where large bonfires are lit to ward off evil spirits.

For Czech tourists, Amrum is easily accessible by ferry from the port of Dagebüll or from the island of Föhr. It is recommended to use local buses or rent a bike, as car traffic is significantly restricted. Don't forget to try specialties like fresh shrimp, Frisian tea, or salty lamb salami. The best time to visit is summer, when temperatures are pleasant and all attractions are open, but spring and autumn also offer a quieter atmosphere and ideal conditions for birdwatching.
