Altmühltal

The Altmühltal, stretching along the meandering Altmühl river, is a nature park famous for its beautiful Jurassic limestone formations. The area is world-renowned for fossil sites, including the famous prehistoric bird Archaeopteryx, discovered in the quarries of Solnhofen. The landscape offers a variety of attractions, from steep rock towers to peaceful floodplain forests and crystal-clear streams, creating an ideal environment for rare plants and animals.

Hikers and cyclists will find a dense network of marked trails, including the long-distance Altmühltal-Radweg cycling path, which guides you through the most beautiful scenery. Canoeing on the river is also popular, allowing you to admire rock gates, caves and medieval castles perched on hilltops. Visit romantic towns such as Eichstätt with its Baroque center or Treuchtlingen with its Renaissance castle and fossil museum.

For Czech travelers, the Altmühltal is easily accessible by car from Plzeň via Rozvadov and Nuremberg (approx. 3 hours). The park offers numerous campsites, guesthouses and bike rentals. Don't forget to stop at the visitor center in Eichstätt, where you can get maps and current excursion tips. The ideal time to visit is spring, when orchids bloom on dry slopes, or Indian summer with pleasant temperatures for hiking.
