An impressive Gothic church, known as the Bergischer Dom, in the middle of the picturesque landscape of the Bergisches Land.
Altenberg Cathedral, formerly the monastery church of the Cistercian abbey, is one of the most important Gothic churches in the Rhineland. Its construction began in 1259 and for centuries it served as the burial place of the Counts of Berg.
Inside, colorful stained glass, monumental organ, and a peaceful atmosphere stand out. The cathedral is used ecumenically by Catholics and Protestants. The surrounding landscape invites walks through the Dhünn valley.
For Czech tourists: admission is free, parking for a fee. The place is an ideal destination for a trip even in rainy weather. We recommend combining the visit with a hike in the surrounding forests.
